The Laboratory for Translational Engineering, led by Dr. Giovanni Traverso, is seeking a Northeastern co-op student to develop experimental strategies for stabilizing and controlling living biological systems. This is a full-time co-op based on-site in Boston.
Living biological systems are strongly affected by their interactions with surrounding materials and environmental conditions. This project seeks to understand and control those interactions using coatings, aqueous formulations, soft-material design, microscopy, and quantitative experimentation.
The co-op student will take a central role in the day-to-day execution of the project. They will help establish the experimental workflow, conduct systematic studies, evaluate material-based interventions, and investigate the mechanisms governing biological stability and recovery. This is a broad, hands-on role for someone who wants meaningful ownership of an interdisciplinary research project.
Responsibilities may include:
- Designing and executing experiments with living biological samples
- Developing reliable protocols for sample handling, treatment, storage, and recovery
- Preparing and applying coatings and aqueous formulations
- Investigating polymers, hydrogels, surfactants, colloids, and other candidate materials
- Performing optical microscopy and quantitative image analysis
- Developing methods to evaluate viability, morphology, behavior, and functional recovery
- Analyzing experimental data and identifying relationships across biological, material, and environmental variables
- Collaborating with researchers developing automation, imaging, and data-analysis tools
We welcome undergraduate and graduate students in mechanical engineering, bioengineering, biomedical engineering, materials science, chemical engineering, chemistry, or related disciplines.
Strong candidates will have several of the following:
- General wet-laboratory or experimental research experience
- Experience designing, conducting, or troubleshooting experiments
- Experience with optical microscopy or quantitative biological imaging
- Familiarity with biomaterials, coatings, polymers, hydrogels, colloids, or aqueous formulations
- Experience with image analysis or quantitative data analysis
- Strong organizational skills and careful experimental documentation
Prior experience with the specific biological system is not required. We are particularly interested in candidates who enjoy conducting experiments, working across traditional disciplinary boundaries, and independently solving open-ended problems.
The student will receive close mentorship, participate in regular research meetings, and be encouraged to propose experiments and help shape the scientific direction of the project. The work is expected to contribute to a larger research program and may lead to research presentations or publications.

EEO Statement:
Mass General Brigham Competency Framework
At Mass General Brigham, our competency framework defines what effective leadership “looks like” by specifying which behaviors are most critical for successful performance at each job level. The framework is comprised of ten competencies (half People-Focused, half Performance-Focused) and are defined by observable and measurable skills and behaviors that contribute to workplace effectiveness and career success. These competencies are used to evaluate performance, make hiring decisions, identify development needs, mobilize employees across our system, and establish a strong talent pipeline.
