Which AI Skills Internships Actually Ask For
Figures as of Nov 6, 2026, read off this site's live skill pages and the analytics chart. Those pages recompute from the daily crawl; this article is a dated snapshot.

The headline: it's mostly Python, across ordinary internships
“AI skills” in internship postings mostly don't mean AI-engineer roles. They mean Python, plus the tools for working with data, asked for across all kinds of internships.
Of the 12,147 open internship postings with a description, 20.7% ask for Python (2,511 of 12,147). Those Python postings are spread across fields (a posting can be in several fields, or none):
- Computer Science: 30.3% (762 of 2,511)
- Data Science: 24.7% (621 of 2,511)
- Engineering: 18% (453 of 2,511)
- Business: 9.5% (238 of 2,511)
- Finance: 4.8% (120 of 2,511)
- Product & Design: 4.2% (105 of 2,511)
Computer Science and Data Science lead, but engineering, business, finance and design internships ask for Python too. Learning Python is not only preparation for AI roles; it is asked for across ordinary internships.
“Asks for” means “mentions”
A posting counts as asking for a skill when its description names the skill, matched as a whole word or phrase from a fixed list of named skills. That is a mention, not a requirement: the count can't tell “required” from “nice to have”, and a posting that needs a skill without naming it isn't counted. Read every share below as “how often postings mention it”.
Data tooling: SQL
7.2% of postings with a description ask for SQL (880 of 12,147). Its postings lean toward data and business work: Data Science 35.8% (315 of 880), Business 25.1% (221 of 880) and Computer Science 23% (202 of 880). Among postings that ask for Python, 25.2% also ask for SQL (633 of 2,511).
Deep-learning frameworks: not published yet
This site doesn't yet publish a mention share for PyTorch, TensorFlow or other machine-learning frameworks: they have no skill page and aren't among the skills the analytics chart shows. Until they are, this article gives no figure for them rather than an estimate.
What to learn first, in the site's demand order
The analytics chart ranks skills by how many postings ask for them. Its top six, as of Nov 6, 2026:
- Excel: 26.5% (3,214 of 12,147)
- Python: 20.7% (2,511 of 12,147)
- C++: 7.7% (933 of 12,147)
- SQL: 7.2% (880 of 12,147)
- Power BI: 5% (the chart prints the share only)
- Git: 4.8% (the chart prints the share only)
For an AI-adjacent path, that suggests Python first, then SQL, then a reporting tool such as Power BI, with Git alongside: among Python postings, 18.4% also ask for Git (463 of 2,511). Excel leads the whole list, and it is worth knowing whatever you study.
See the Python page for the fields, employers and skills that come with it, and the analytics page for the full chart.
