How to read this: this compares pay in postings that ask for the skill with pay in all postings. It mostly shows which kinds of jobs ask for it — not what the skill alone does to your pay.

How to build it
Free resources, one project and a resume bullet to adapt. Time spans are rough estimates.

Project: Answer questions with a public dataset

about 2 weeks part time (estimate)

Load a public dataset (city open data, a sports archive) into PostgreSQL or SQLite and write 10 queries that answer real questions, using joins, GROUP BY and window functions.

Sample resume bullet

Wrote SQL queries over [N] rows of [dataset] to answer [question], surfacing [finding] used in [decision].

Replace every [bracket] with your real numbers; never invent them.

How these numbers are made

Counting unit: a posting is one role. Repeat requisitions from the same employer with the same title and the same location (city, state or province, country, and remote or not) count once, using the newest one. Counted over open, de-duplicated postings with a description (12,147), once per posting; the 880 SQL postings stand for 920 requisitions. Every share, median and pairing below uses postings, not requisitions. A posting counts as asking for SQL when its description matches: word, any case; not inside PostgreSQL/MySQL/NoSQL. A skill is never counted for its own employer's postings. Shares show their N and denominator: 7.2% (880 of 12,147).

Pay compares hourly US-dollar pay (weekly, monthly and yearly pay converted, ranges at their midpoint), only for postings that publish it: 339 SQL postings against 4545 postings overall. Medians, not averages.
