Intern Pay in 2026–27: What the Postings That State a Salary Actually Say

Figures as of Nov 6, 2026, read off this site's live pay pages. Those pages recompute from the daily crawl; this article is a dated snapshot. For current numbers see US internship pay and Canada internship pay.

Most postings don't state pay

Of the 12,158 open internship postings this site tracked, 42.8% (5,209 of 12,158) publish their pay. Another 1% (125 of 12,158) say the role is unpaid, 15.6% (1,900 of 12,158) mention pay in a way that couldn't be read reliably, and 40.5% (4,924 of 12,158) don't say. Every figure below describes the postings that publish pay, not all internships.

The figures come from the postings themselves. Each role is counted once: repeat postings from the same employer with the same title and the same location count as one. A pay range counts at its midpoint, and weekly, monthly and yearly pay is converted to an hourly rate.

US: the headline

The median hourly pay in postings that publish US-dollar pay is $27.00. The middle half of those postings pay $22.50–$36.11 an hour. N=4,545 postings.

“Middle half” is the 25th to 75th percentile: a quarter of postings pay less than the lower number, a quarter pay more than the upper one.

US pay by field

Median US$ per hour, middle half, and N (postings that publish pay). A posting can be in several fields, or none.

FieldMedian per hourMiddle halfN
Business$25.60$22.00–$35.001,017
Engineering$29.50$25.00–$36.21691
Computer Science$35.00$26.74–$45.56539
Finance$27.00$23.00–$35.43510
Data Science$37.50$27.00–$58.00383
Product & Design$29.00$24.50–$38.12224

Data Science ($37.50, N=383) and Computer Science ($35.00, N=539) have the highest medians. Business is the largest group and has the lowest median ($25.60, N=1,017). Data Science also has the widest middle half ($27.00–$58.00).

US pay by term

Median US$ per hour, middle half, and N. The term the posting names; “Not stated” when it names none.

TermMedian per hourMiddle halfN
Not stated$26.00$21.00–$36.302,329
Summer$28.00$23.46–$37.001,753
Spring$25.00$22.00–$31.68334
Winter$37.00$29.00–$42.5089
Fall$20.50$13.94–$31.3740

Summer is the largest named term ($28.00, N=1,753). The Winter (N=89) and Fall (N=40) groups are much smaller, so their medians move more as postings come and go. The live page also shows pay by state; 29 states with fewer than 30 such postings aren't shown there.

The Python premium, and what it does not mean

Postings that ask for Python have a median of $37.50 an hour (N=1012), against $27.00 for all postings with pay (N=4545): +38.9%.

That gap mostly shows which kinds of jobs ask for Python, not what Python alone adds to an offer. Of the 2,511 postings that ask for it, 30.3% (762 of 2,511) are in Computer Science, 24.7% (621 of 2,511) are in Data Science and 18% (453 of 2,511) are in Engineering: fields that pay more than most. Python puts you in the pool for those internships; it doesn't set the salary. See the Python page for the full breakdown.

Canada

Canadian pay is kept separate and never converted: only pay published in Canadian dollars is used. Of 1,209 open postings in Canada, 54.3% (656 of 1,209) publish pay.

The median is C$30.52 an hour, with a middle half of C$25.50–C$42.30. N=358 postings.

These figures are concentrated. As the live page puts it: University of Ottawa (29.1%) and Hitachi Energy (4.5%) together account for 33.5% of the Canadian postings behind these pay figures. With one employer behind that large a share, its pay rates weigh heavily on the Canadian median.

298 Canadian postings that publish pay are left out of these figures as teaching-assistant or corrector roles. Their pay is set by university union agreements and, counted in, would dominate the sample.

How these numbers are made

  • One role, one posting. Repeat requisitions from the same employer with the same title and the same location (city, state or province, country, remote or not) count once, so a role posted once per store or office adds one pay value, not one per store.
  • Ranges at their midpoint. A posted range counts as the value halfway between its ends.
  • Converted to hourly. Weekly pay ÷ 40, monthly × 12 ÷ 2,080, yearly ÷ 2,080. Hourly values outside $5–$250 (C$5–C$250 in Canada) are almost always misread amounts and are left out.
  • Canadian dollars kept separate. Nothing is converted between C$ and US$, and no figure mixes the two.
  • Teaching assistants and correctors left out of pay. 301 such postings on the US pay page and 298 on the Canada page, found by title. University union agreements set their pay, and some universities post one per course, so they would swamp the median. They still count in the share that publishes pay.
  • Small groups hidden. Any group with fewer than 30 postings that publish pay isn't shown.
  • Daily on the live pages, dated here. The live pages recompute from the daily crawl. This article is a snapshot as of Nov 6, 2026.
